What do you think about HYALURONIC ACID as a supplement for joint comfort and mobility?

HYALURONIC ACI D is a synovial fluid and is now being used in two forms (naturally occurring and synthetic) as an arthritis treatment. I don't personally have any data or experience with clinical results. Maybe Dr. Dave or physioguy can chime into this and educate us all.

I have worked with many knee problems and used other supplements and exercise to eliminate the symptoms. What do you know of the application? I will get on line in the next two days , make a few calls, and bone up on the subject. Vik

HA is what is in the product that Fuzzy Zoeller endorses. They say this used to be given only by injection, but now is available in capsules.

H. A. has been used for decades in race horses, most successfully in knees and ankles. As always, results vary.

I am aware of injecting arthritic joints with HA ( a series of 3 injections) and the success rate has really not been any better than injection of steroids. I am not at all aware of any oral formulations of HA and neither was an orthopedic surgeon to whom I refer most of my ortho patients. I did a search on mdconsult.com and aafp.org and came up with nothing. Anyone have a name of the oral HA formulation?? I would be very curious to see how it works. Interesting........ Conquer HA is the trade name. It comes in 30 mg capsules.

I believe they have a web site. If you google Conquer HA several results come up concerning HA.

Thanks lagster--I found the Conquer HA website and reviewed it pretty carefully. Hyaluronic acid is a protein and when taken orally should be pretty well broken down by the acid in your stomach. I can't comprehend how they think it gets into the synovial fluid in your joints. I also notice they have no double-blind studies to back up their claims, only patient testimonials. The big catch phrase in medicine over the past few years is "evidence-based medicine". I see no scientific evidence that it works, but, as with any substance, there will be a placebo effect. That's why in any pharmaceutical studies you will find about 10% of people will develop headaches, nausea,etc.---and they are taking the placebo, not the medicine under investigation!!! Will this product hurt you? Doubtful. If you take it under the assumption it will help you, it probably will!! That's why those metal bracelets sell so well, even though controlled studies showed they have no effect. However, some people think they are great. Whatever . Show me some SCIENTIFIC evidence and I'll be happy to change my opinion. Stay healthy everybody. Dr Dave

Touche Dr. Dave. I agree completely with the good Doctors dialogue. Same with Creatine and every other supplement and every other pharmaceutical. Most of the bodies function starts with your attitude about it's potential. That is to say that "As a man thinkith . . ." I am probably less inclined toward synthetic medicine than Dr. Dave and less natural supplement oriented than my Health food store owning friend and yet I know that the body does need support on occassion. I personally take MSM for my joint health and ease on a daily basis. Take it easy and find your most organic solution to save your health and save your money. Vik
