Help!
Iceberg dead ahead is how serious this is. jumped in a life boat and ended up here.

Symptoms - Im hitting top-spinning hooks with the woods Its happened to me before and eventually i got over it, but the bugger has poped back to say "how you doin".. not too bloody well thankyou!

additional info. most of my practice is with wedges (limited space), could this be a factor? Im hitting my wedges and mid irons fine. also I'm not 100% sure that my left wrist isnt bending some with the woods.. likely result a top spin hook?

went on the range today after a game (hit only 4/15 fairways, 8 of the misses big duck hooks with either driver or 3wood) and was trying some things (no clue). Had some success when emphasising the feel of the right shoulder moving downplane. But my shots were still all over tha place.

HELP!

IF... you are hiting big draws with the wedges in practice... that could translate to big hooks with the driver. I would suggest... if you can only practice with the wedges ... make the ball flight straight, or hit little fades for a while.

You will probably want to have an AI film your swing... if the problem persists.

Also... if you are practicing mostly short shots... use 12-5-1, then 12-5-2 as guides. Your hands may need some refresher education.

Hope this helps!

Practice with the driver by concentrating on hitting the inside aft quadrant of the ball, while getting your hands over your left foot before Impact.

Incidentially, your hooks don't have top-spin, which would prevent the ball from getting airborn.

re-adjust address alignments, clubface may be too closed for hinge action. You are Swinging, I guess?

Sound like grip/setup is off or you have breakdown.

Hit left hand only chip shots with a slightly open clubface. I'm betting it is a breakdown issue.

If your grip is correct, you shouldn't be 'doing' anything with your hands during the swing to square up.

thanks all

wedges and mid irons are straight, or slight draw. will try to get rid of the draw. seeing an AI in person unfortunately isn't possible. my book is on the way but until then i'll continue to do my impact bag (replacement) drills.

MizJoe
your right, inside aft and flat left are things i need to do more work on. knew it wasnt top spin, but for some reason i continue to spout that dribble they definitely give the illusion of top spin.

6bmike
at impact fix i have the face slightly open, then when i move my hands to adjusted address, the face is square to the target or sometimes slightly closed (dependant on ball position). does that sound right? thinking about it i am inconsistent about checking impact fix alignments. a couple of weeks ago I went thru an epiphany, the end result being than im much closer to eliminating the mixing of hitting and swinging components.

Edz
will be giving that drill a go.

another tidbit. they were all starting just left of my target.

I would have the clubface open at address and check where the clubface is at impact fix- it should square up there. It should still be open at adjusted address. Be careful that you don't haphazardly move the hands back and forth. Impact fix isn't a forward press. Since the door closes with an horizontal hinge, the door should be open slightly so it can close.

BTW- I know it is scary having a clubface open at address if you came from the same place we old time slicers once dwelled. But it works to have it open a bit.

Someone let me know if I'm wrong.

Mike - I agree with most of what you say, especially about getting used to the openness of the clubface at Impact. Just one thing - at Impact Fix, the face should be open instead of square. If you go to adjusted address position, you may find that the clubface can be square or closed.

Thanks MJ

Impact fix, though it appears to be a simple move forward with the hands, should be checked by your AI as routine. I battle with a snap hook from time to time (Usually when the cart path is to the right ) and it is from the clubface closing from square to shut.

And yes, that open clubface can play bugger with old computer files in your head. Delete and re-write.

6bm,

Yes, Impact Fix is way more than just moving the hands forward. In fact, I believe you can only crudely approximate it because the dynamics of the stroke just aren't there in a statically posed position. In fact, I actually don't use it much anymore.
