Tour Prefered
Recently bought a Taylor Made TP R5 Dual.Whilst the shaft is obviously different(diamana 83g),the head feels and sounds different to my previous (non TP) R5.Are TP heads that different?Any comments would be appreciated

Neil,

My understanding on the TP rescue clubs is that the "non-TP" heads are internally weighted with a draw bias. I would imagine it's similar with the drivers as well.

I could be mistaken, but I think the TP versions set up "square" while the non-TP versions set up "closed."

True. Square.

They are also built to feel more solidly I believe....or at least different.....

....and heavier....with a higher centre of gravity.....for less spin, which produces a flatter trajectory shape.

Thanks for the comments. The TP is certainly square -that's the reason I bought it -makes a huge difference to the shot shape.Your comments on weighting make sense, feels much heavier. Thanks

I hit a copule of these (and the R7 tp) at a TM demo day...wow! It felt much different than the non TP models...really, really heavy and solid through impact. Every shot felt and sounded like the ball was absolutely mashed.

The rep said that the TP models are 1-2 degrees open, and the shaft accounted for the difference in feel.

so...you want to sell yours cheap?

Heck of a shaft. Did you happen to hit the same head in another shaft for comparison?

I didn't but would like to. My driver needs a different shaft, so I'm looking...

Little bit of misinformation
Just want to let everyone know that if you find a square retail golf club, you are truly lucky. Even the TP versions are between 1.5 and .5 degrees closed, and still have the draw bias, although less than the non-tp versions. The only way to truly have a square or open face and remove draw bias is to 1) Have hot melt added to the head and get it cranked open, or 2) Buy a tour issue driver.

Tempest in a teapot.
I personally think the whole open-faced, closed-faced thing is overrated. I can draw or fade just about any club I have at will, be it be it a Duffy ridge top 200 tour fairway wood, a closed face, draw biased Nicklaus Air Max driver, my old non offset Hogan Director irons or my hook faced Cleveland TA-5 irons. Same for shafts. My shaft flexes are all over the place. The only club I have that I have I have trouble drawing is a Nickent Genex 3dx 20* hackstick with a ladies flex shaft. It likes to make about a 2-3 yard fade. Go figgure.
