The Tournament Proper
Okay, everybody now knows the cut was at +4, and that Brian Gay missed by two. I think my 50+ tweets covered that waterfront. :)
I'm back in Atlanta, and there's still a U.S. Open Championship to decide, one we need to talk about. You have something to say . . . Let's hear it! :salut: |
THE USGA HAS RUINED THE US OPEN................
I want Oakmont, Southern Hills, Oakland Hills, Olympic Club, Hazeltine, AAC, #2, Congressional, ect ect. 20 yard FWS and 6 inch rough, concrete greens miss the fw a foot and pitch out stuff................oh wait I forget the USGA only cares about f'ing tiger winning. I swear they wanted him to win 3 in a row hence the torry, black and pebble rotation. I mean really back in the day, with a US OPEN set up, it could rain 3 inches and you would never know.......cause the course was already dry, now 2 inches and the place floods. USGA>>>>>>>>PLEASE MOVE BACK TO A REAL COURSE WITH A REAL SET UP<<<<<< the US open is suppose to find the best golfer, not who can bomb it then power it out of the medium rough. I miss the days where Janzen and Payne where always there.........well there is still the Open Championship where golf is still pure, albiet at Turnberry. sorry for the rant |
WOW, sorry needham, but I disagree. At most venues the course would be unplayable after this much rain. The USGA and Bethpage are doing a HELL of a job dealing with the cards they have been dealt!

oh and another thing.......J Miller has to be the best reason to EVER watch golf on TV....GOTTA LOVE IT!!!

I know as a Superintendent myself, yes the super and his crew has done a GREAT GREAT JOB.......the USGA not so much. and before anyone ask yes I have held local, regional, and national type events (state ams, mini- tours, jr world qual ect) but I do respect your opinion Kev. |

I think that the Greenkeeper and the crew need even more credit. Seems to be glossed over a bit, but I cannot fathom how they are doing this great of a job.
Bethpage is great, but the USGA seems to struggle with the fine line between being tough and still being fair. I'd rather see this US Open at Bethpage than the years in the past where they overcooked the greens. While the US Open should be determined with a winner at even par, you still should be rewarded when you hit a reasonbly good shot. I remember watching Ricky Barnes for a few holes back when they played the BellSouth at TPC Sugarloaf and came away unimpressed. His swing looks much better now, but it still seems to have some of his old look to it and it may be creeping back into his game. Pressure does that to you. My guess is Glover wins. I hope I never have to hear Chris Berman do anything with golf ever again...make that all sports...well, maybe something like the Lower Oakland Roller Derby playoffs would suffice. He simply doesn't understand and/or care that the sporting events that he announces is about the players on the field, not getting one's self over with tired, cliched and obnoxious puns and nicknames. 3JACK |
US Open
Phil is in position to steal this open if Barnes played 4 more holes he would of cracked the swing got quick and snappy. As far as Glover inexperienced!

all just MHO........... ROCK ON MY LAG BROTHERS,,,ROCK ON ! |
The bottom line is David Fay and Co changed the Open setup and course rota so Tiger can win. 1 1/2 inch rough? Are you kidding me? The Open was always about hitting it in the fairway. Guys are hitting it 30 yards wide and hitting hybrids on the green from the rough. Look at Mike Weir! He's still -1 and hasnt smelled a fairway in 3 days! Bring back Baltusrol, Oakmont, Inverness, and Shinnecock and stop it with the muni tracks!!!

Congratulations Lucas Glover
Bethpage #17, 2009 ![]() The #17th, in 2016 ![]() Well as long as the US Open is moving in this direction, maybe the Tournament should jump 15 years into the future. Each Golfer and his Caddie/Guide/Sherpa/Navigator, will begin the 25 mile first hole par 150 on the corner of Main and State which ends in Hooksville by evening. Special camera crews are standing by in their 4x4 golf carts to bring you complete coverage as Golfers traverse the countryside ........... Below is a view of the picturesque 17th, 979 Yard, Par 4. ![]() |
Sherpa!! Lol I Love It!!!!!

They may have set it up for Tiger, but the rains messed with that idea big time.
HE couldn't put a lick on those algae infested greens that required a full swing to move the ball. Tiger is at his best when the greens are like oiled marble, and the ball rolls exactly where he hits it with a feather touch. |

I agree with tigers putting.........but we have to look at the yardage to play today...TOTAL TIGER SET UP.....all the par 5 are set for easy reach for him .....WTF IS THE 127 yd 3 par doing on back 9 at an US OPEN (pebble excluded)........and to top it off 350yd finishing hole....winner hit 5 iron 9 iron LOL. or something .....they wanted Eldick to have wedge in his hands all day so he could make a charge..........they wanted 3 in a row for him... torry, black, and pebble. I rarely root against someone, but I am SO glad EW did not win. I also get tired of hearing....."it's close" maybe if he would have stuck with Butch and not gone to Hank "I want you to get REAL flat so you can be way under plane and have a huge hold-off finsh to keep from snapping it" Haney he would have had a chance. sorry guys I do not intend to sound crude or mean but sometimes you just have to call a spade a spade. |
Does anyone think that the Holes should be reachable to be fair?

5 pars are risk/reward but I think 4 pars are a must to have everyone able to get there in two. that was always the thing at an US open the FW was so narrow and rough tall enough that the bombers had to hit 3 iron and the avg guys 3 metal then everyone had 4,5,6 iron in. but when BG is hitting a 18 yd fw and EW is hitting a 30 yd fw that is unfair b/c it rewards the bomber and with no real rough, it is set up for the longer player. |

Daryl, Thanks for the pictures. What’s the pin placement on that par 4?
If they have graduated rough then why not graduated fairways that get narrower the closer you get to the hole. I started playing the Black in 1966. Holes 2, 5, 6, 9, 10 and 15 had fairway in the gaps that gave you the option to run the ball onto the green. They eliminated that option in the 90's. Now it's all aerial. 11 also had the option, but they eliminated that by extending the right side bunker to the front. Of course the weather conditions took away all the run. Yoda, It was so nice to have the chance to meet you during Brian’s practice round on Wednesday and be able to thank you in person for this wonderful website. David |

From a TGM standpoint, Glover has a terrific action. His on plane right shoulder is something to watch. At no time does he ever lose his balance. On plane right shoulder, steady head, marvelous rythym, no question why he was the best this week.

Who was to know? He had never made a cut in the U.S. Open, much less won it. Amid the daily dose of pathos, God must have a lot of fun. :) |
