Yoda,

Thanks for the lessons on pivot this past weekend. It is now very clear to me after working on the Bob MacDonald drills that I have never quite had the proper pivot.

I've been working on the narrower stance and adding some more wrist cock. Additionally, my right forearm take away is getting me on plane instead of under.

I went out after work with our club champion and by the time we finished up, my driver distance had closed to within 15 yards of his. I've never been closer than 30 yards behind him in the past.

I'm going to keep up the MacDonald drills and try to do some filming in the next few weeks to show my hopefully improved swing plane.

I have been teaching the 'MacDonald Exercises' (Golf, Bob MacDonald, 1927) since Paul Bertholy showed them to me in the summer of 1982. The exercises -- illustrated elsewhere in these pages -- were then 'only' 55 years old.

Now they are 80 years old.

To these I have added the precision alignments I learned from Homer Kelley and The Golfing Machine. Does that make them mine? Naah. Only more precise.

Bob's 'Exercises' will be 100 years old in 2027.

And 200 years old in 2127.

They will work then...

As they do now.

Just as they did in 1927.

Why?

It is The Basic Motion.

What actually changed in your pivot with these exercises... where was your pivot faulty in first place?

What feelings did you get whilst doing the exercises...? What felt different?

15 yards extra ( particularly straight yards! ) is what the average golfer pays $400 for with the new driver... but rarely sees on the course... i think you made a wiser investment!!

What changed in my pivot? The best way to state this is I am now pivoting.

Prior to this change, I was moving my weight laterally to the outside of the right foot then trying to drive off it with a hitting motion. The proper pivot is moving the weight to the back of the right foot. See the drills. It is very much like a walking motion. Try marking time in place as the drills show.

Now, the key for me executing this is actually in my hands. You see, I had a few other faults that had crept into my motion since I last saw Yoda, as follows:
  1. Stance too wide
  2. Ball too far back in stance
  3. Swaying off the ball to get behind it, probably due to improper foot width and ball position
  4. Taking the club "under" the plane then looping back at the top
  5. Not allowing the wrists to naturally cock at the top

I was hitting.

Changes:
  1. Narrowed the stance, changed set up routine to help repeat
  2. Employ a true right arm pick up / right forearm take away to fix the "under plane" move
  3. Allow the right forearm action to naturally cock the wrists at the top
  4. Letting the body pivot, per the MacDonald drills, as a result of the right forearm takeaway
  5. Stop the sway (easy to do with proper pivot)

Just a few changes. :laughing9

I am taking this a bit to the course, but mostly I'm taking it the to the range working on all of the above in this order:
  1. Basic motion
  2. Acquired Motion
  3. Full Swing

I think I read that somewhere!

The main issue I seem to be fighting with all of this is I tend to move my head forward on the downstroke. When I stay behind the ball it really goes.

Oh, forgot one more thing....I'm swinging now. :)

Remember, everybody, the Body (Zone 1 / Pivot) has its assignments. As do the Arms (Zone 2 / Power) and the Hands (Zone 3 / Purpose).

Each Zone must execute its assignments irrespective of the others.

In a Hand-Controlled Pivot, the Right Forearm keeps the Clubshaft On Plane in Start Up as the Body Turns and generates the circular motion of the Stroke.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

Each Zone independent...

But coordinate.

Club Championship in 2 weeks!!!! Here in Pittsburgh we haven't even started PLAYING yet!!! The US Open is 60 days away and the superintendent at Oakmont is on the verge of a nervous breakdown. 2 weeks to the Club Championship???? I wish you well----but you're killin' us northerners!
