most effective way to slow startdown
What is the most effective way you have used to slow the start of the downswing? I tend to layoff the club at the top and come into the ball underplane. Tried freezing the right wrist, and the faster I go at the ball, the more I go underplane. Any suggestions?

What's causing the club to go "under"? Are you standing up? |

The answer depends on: 1. how you initiate the Startdown 2. Startdown resistance Initiate Startdown The purpose of the Startdown is to propel the Power Package On Plane to Release. The Right Shoulder moves On Plane toward the Ball. One way is to put weight on your left heel to initiate the downswing. Your left knee straightens; your Right Knee bends, Hips move laterally and Tilt, Torso Tilts, Right Shoulder is Thrown toward the Ball. No Muscle. The slower you lower the Left heel or move weight to it, the slower the Startdown. Too Simple. Startdown Resistance The Shoulders, Arms and Clubshaft and Clubhead have many alignment relationships and they have weight. If they are aligned correctly, then during Startdown you’ll feel their weight. They Resist a Change in direction. It’s like having a ball on a long chain. If the chain is slacked then little resistance is felt when first pulling it until the chain is taut. If the Chain is taut, then the full weight of the ball is resisting your pull at the start. Summary: It takes lots of Practicing the right stuff. |
Make it heavy with both hands!

Load it with tons of "Lag" and "sustain it" (or don't release). How? Start the downswing (or interrupt the backswing) in the middle of the backswing all the way to the finish. Focus on (or unify) both hands, pulling, to allow it on-plane. |
Just a thought!

I had the same problem a few years back. I think it was caused by my following some poor advice on significantly weakening my grip. It wasn't long before several hook compensations had crept into my swing - dropping the club underplane and blowing the ball out to the right chief among them. |
Great responses, Bucket was correct, I am standing up as a result of the right hip moving out and blocking the downswing. If anything the right hip fires way too soon, causing the club to drop or be blocked by the hip in the downswing. These are great things to work on, thanks to all.

Question: When are you standing up? Immeadiately? Or do you think you may be standing up to shallow it out? Sometimes your shoulders can drag the hands out and you know you have to get to the inside of the ball . . . the shaft is coming down too steep so you stand up to lay it down. |
It is immediate, my hands actually drop underplane at the top.
