Set the Lag?

I have noticed that, to my eye, some of the longest have a technique for increasing the lag on the way down by not setting the club "hard" at the top. Ie. Camilo Villegas. Thoughts on this technique? And how it fits TGM? This has a lotv to do with angles and casting prevention and release points and Rhythm?
