Device to check balance of golf balls
I can't remember what the name of this device is (? Check-Go?). It spins the golf ball and you draw a line while it is spinning which supposedly finds the true balance of the ball. This prevents it from wobbling off line while putting, yada, yada..... Does it work? Is it worth buying??
Thanks, Dr Dave

Sounds like a good thing to try
I saw that Ted had one of these when I was down there in February (I remember Yoda asking him about it). I did some searching around and found a review of it: http://www.golfclubreview.com/spin_balanced_summary.htm

The golfclubreview site seems to be pretty good in unbiased equipment reviews and they pretty much highly recommend spin balancing balls. If you scroll down it has a specific review of the Technasonic Check-Go device.

Is it going to make a hacker into a scratch golfer....no, but it looks like it could save a couple of strokes per round both in a little longer and straighter tee shots and in putts that roll true. I am going to pick 1 up cause for $25 it seems like a no-brainer to get something that can help your good shots become even better.

Thanks Dr. Dave for reminding me of this product.

Keith

Another Possibility for Ball Balancing
My first post, so be gentle

This is very interesting, since I just tried ball balancing for the first time.

I have to say that it really does work and is worth the time it takes. I played a round the other day using balanced balls and my putting was outstanding. I made 4 putts of 12 feet or more and an additional 6 of 5+ feet. I also burned the edge on several others. In general, I noticed a big difference in my putting.

I used a different method to perform the balance, however. (taken from Tom Wishon's Search for the Perfect Golf Club). Take 2 cups of hot water and mix in 1 cup of Epson Salts and a drop of dishsoap. Submerge a golf ball in the solution and notice how it settles. Mark the golf ball at the top. Repeat if desired. Unless the ball is in perfect balance, it should settle at the same place. This is the lightest point of the golf ball and the heaviest point is on the other side. According to Wishon, the ball should want to spin on an axis orthogonal to the line that passes through the lightest and heaviest points on the ball.

Here's the really interesting thing. I also have that ball spin device, and my thought was to see how it compared to the density method. So I first found the lightest point using the water method, then washed and dried the ball and used the "Check & Go Golf Ball Sweet Spot Finder" as directed. There was no correlation between the line drawn using the Sweet Spot Finder and the lightest point of the ball. I repeated this several times and found the same results.

I'm not sure what this means...Maybe my "check and go" was broken (although it seemed to work properly). I tend to trust the "dunk and float" method more than the "check and go". Plus it's a lot cheaper to buy water and epson salt then the 25 dollar device.

lusus, I'm gonna try your alternate method. When I use my check-go, my line is usually NOT halfway round the ball as shown in their commercial, but rather, my line looks like it circles the ball at about 60/40. I don't know why that is...

Kinda makes you wonder why the ball makers don't offer this marking - good marketing and sales there.

Wake up ball folks...... mark the 'balance line' when you make em!

Wow! Mine does that too....glad its just not me.

I quit worrying about it though since the line would still be on the same plane. It just looks goofy as compared to centered.
