Tom Tomasello on chipping and Pitching?

I love Tommy Tomasello's videos.
Does anyone out there know what he
taught regarding Chipping and Pitching?

Checkout the Tomasello Letter series for chipping and pitching....for pitching Tommy taught both the lob and cut shot procedures from the book. For chipping and putting he used an uncocked wrist position and a hands throw trigger or right arm throw trigger per 10-20-A or -B.

For bunker shots Tommy also used double wrist cock and vertical hinging.

I,m not a good (round the green chipper),At our course the greens are not bigger than postage stamps,most are elevated and also little mounds about 5 ft from greenside.

As usual,I,m usally there just in front of mounds,now,I use a chip action that includes a f/arm, jolt, this action I find is hard to judge smaller distances,Today,I chipped one say 15ft from green using jolt ,I thought I hit the chip well,but it went over other side,I then chipped with swinging arms,no jolt,chipped it well.
Is this (swinging arms ) acceptable with TGM theory.
It feels good,but,concerned that it may break-down under preesure if it,s not the right thing to do.

The left arm always swings, I believe. The right arm always drives, either passively courtesy of CF, or directly through muscular thrrrrust!
What manner of hinge action do you employ, Brownman? I have found that a basic motion procedure (swinging or hitting) can become very versatile if you utilize all 3 possible hinge actions. I love using vertical hinging around the greens. Many people take the club back too far and the tendency then is to deccelerate, or flip that puppy and hit a quail across the green. With vertical hinging I feel that I can be agressive while still producing softer shots.

You can pull it or push it, but without an understanding (I do not assume you do not) of hinging you cannot utilize the three available to you. Hinge action is clubface control. PreTGM I had a tendency to hit very low chip shots. In fact as a result I tended only to use wedges around the greens! I realized that I was using a horizontal hinge action ( as I do with my acquired and total motion) Then my eyes were opened to hinge action. By the way my putting has become more consistent by using an angled hinge.

I know your question related to "left arm swing", but it occurred to me that a discussion on hinging may be helpful to you.

By the way you can using horizontal hinging for all shots around the green, but you would have to move your plane line around, relative to your target line to produce the desired effect. I know Jeff Hull hits great lob shots with horizontal hinging. I like to change the hinge action. Why? Because it reminds me of what I did not know before!

Good stuff Okie..... it's amazing the number of options available around the greens once you develop a solid understand of hinge action. And with the smaller stroke and slower swing speed, it is very easy to utilize any of the hinges with either hitting or swinging.

In case you haven't seen it you should look up VJ Trolio's post (I believe it's in this section of the forum) regarding a lob shot using the "hands-only basic plane". It requires a swinging action but it's a great tool to add to your short-game arsenal..... a bit "counter-intuitive" but very effective.

Thanks Guys for your help,You are bang on the money,I am a hitter, after reading your threads I realise that Im using H/Hinge round the greens,I should by the sound of it be using V/h or A/h.Guess it boils down to me NOT fully comprehending Hinge actions.Back to basic motion practice.Thanks again

Don't dispense with the horizontal hinge...too much good compression! Just know that if you want the ball to land "dead" the layback of the vertical hinge will get the job done. Learn to use all three with all the clubs you like to use around the greens. Personal favorites will emerge! I love hitting an acquired motion lob wedge with a vertical hinge...I call it VERTIGO!

My hand throwing sweep releasing driver (downwind) is called PARABOLA! I might be exposing myself as a dribbling halfwit but I name them ALL! An old timer recommended this little technique when I was a junior (well in the rearview mirrow, now) to bring my range game to the first tee. The idea is to figure out the mechanics on the range etc. During this process you will discover pet favorites, shots that you can produce a high percentage of the time. I call my hitting angled hinge pitching wedge (from about 115) TOM-TOM! So, in effect all the way around I am selecting (by name) the stroke pattern required. You gotta have fun, right? One more: my basic motion 7 iron with horizontal hinge (essentially a bump and run) I call GROWLER. The inner monologue will go something like " Let's hit us a little growler, here."
