Plumbobbing
VJ,

Does plumbobbing work? Many times it seems to work perfectly and helps me pick a line. However, I noticed sometimes it doesn't give a true reading and I don't play enough break. Seems like it really works most of the time.

I'm wondering your thoughts on this. I believe Pelz says there is no science behind it, but not sure I believe it.

Trig,

I am with you on this. Pelz is not an optomotrist, (i think that is how you spell it) and neither am I; but, I do believe "see" benefit in it. The line of the putt is dictated by the speed of the putt which is dictated by the slope of the terrain and the "feel" for the execution of the golf stroke (even though it is a putt) itself.

I feel plumbing a putt is helpful at times. I have seen (read, heard) many different varieties and I believe it gives all of us a vertical line to find slope.

Geoff M. would be a better instructor to why it works for certain because of his research into eyes. I just know it has helped me get to the score's tent with fewer shots over the years.

Sustain our lag,
Trolio

Civil Engineer Vs Optometrist
Trig/VJ,

It amazes me how the validity of plumb-bobbing seems to always ends up with two camps - one that swears by it, and the other that says it doesn't do a thing. (Seems like there are too many pro's that do it for there not to be something to it). My understanding is that it will give you an idea of which DIRECTION a putt will break but not necessarily HOW MUCH it will break as it's a function of where you stand when performing the plumb bob relative to the hole. It can't necessarily account for all the contours between where you stand and the hole. (That might explain why it works some of the time for you Trig).

I recall a good article written in one of the golf pubs years ago which said it does work but that it was important that you took a very wide stance when plumbing to best account for the terrain.

Seems like there would be a straight-forward study that could be performed (ala Pelz) that would put the issue of plumb-bob validity to bed once and for all.
