Matt Killen - Academy Live

Caught a little of TGC Academy Live last night. They had Matt Killen (Kenny Perry's 20 year old coach). He actually stressed the "flat left wrist, bent right wrist" as a key component in a good swing! He even drew lines on Kenny's hands at impact to show it. Went through a version of the basic chip motion as a drill to ingrain that feeling.

Seems like a good young teacher. It's always nice to see some of the TGM fundamentals highlighted in one of these shows.

Here's a nice article featuring Matt:

He must have said "flat left wrist, bent right wrist" a dozen times. Good to hear.

EdZ 03-14-2006 11:58 AM

I caught the first part of the show and will watch the rest later.

I agree, it is nice to see more and more evidence of TGM on TGC. The momentum has been building for some time now.

Flat left, bent right, lag and basic motion. Chips and punch shots too.

Yet still no real PUBLIC credit to HOMER KELLY.

Why not?

Reminds me of Rocky and Bullwinkle....

"Hey Rocky..... watch me pull a RABBIT out of a hat" ;)

Or was that Lenny..... "tell me about the rabbit George"

I agree Ed. I was leaning forward watching the screen waiting for the words "The Golfing Machine" or the name "Homer Kelly" to be mentioned, but it never happened.

I think he even referred to Kenny's motion as "his procedure"!
Could be a coincidence but I've never heard someone who wasn't versed in TGM call a motion "a procedure".

He is only 21

He was seemingly very composed for a 21 year old on national TV. He may have been extremely nervous, and the time to mention Homer and book may never have presented itself.

He has publicly stated that he studied the Golfing Machine.
He also sounds like he knows the Laws book, also.

I say give the kid a break, and give him some time. He's only 21! What were you doing at 21?

Wolf,

Not trying to get on him - I thought it was one of the better Academy Live shows I've seen. And he seemed FAR from nervous. I was pretty impressed by his composure as well and was surpised when they said he was 21 and still in college.

I just think there is a general frustration on the part of those who study and believe TGM that it rarely gets any props on the largest of stages (i.e television). Regardless, it was nice to see a teacher mention some of the "imperatives" instead of the usual cookie-cutter "here's how you fix your slice" that you get on that show.

Man, I wish I knew Matt was on last night!!!

I am very excited to see some young guys teaching TGM!!!!

I'm sure that the current TGM Big Dogs (Lynn Blake, Brian Manzella, Rob Noel, and Chuck Evans) already know that the future of TGM is in training young teachers through the book.

That's something David Orr(Annikan Skywalker) is already doing, so keep your eyes out for the next young "stud" TGM instructor to come out of Buies Creek, NC.

TGM seldom mentioned

I have never heard Martin Hall, Chuck Cook, or any other A.I. mention Homer or the book during their segments on The Golf Channel. Perhaps this is network policy. Perhaps this is Home Office policy. I have heard Brandel Chablee cite Homer and the Book. Does anyone have any insight or information regarding this?

Not knocking him one bit, I thought he did a wonderful job!

Hey Matt - what's your screenname ;)

Ted Fort is an A.I. and he makes sure to mention Homer and give him due credit(so it's not home office policy). He did so when he spoke at the Atlanta Golf Show check out that thread with Ted's Bio. and you'll see how an AI should mention Homer.

Martin Hall

Martin Hall did mention HK and TGM in TGC Academy Live show on 17-04-2001. He mentioned Chuck and Ben Doyle helped him to understand The Golfing Machine book by HOMER KELLY.

Thanks for the post. You either have a great memory, or you found the archive episode on the Golf Channel site. :D

Young Teachers

Bray, I could not agree with you more about David Orr being the next great teacher. I enjoy being in the same room with young guys who are willing to learn to become a quality teacher. I can't thank David enough for being so willing to share his hard earned knowledge.

I can't say why they have never referenced Mr. Kelley. But I will say this is not abonormal behavior for many people in many walks of life. Not everyone gives proper credit or reference to the people with original ideas.

I have both Hall, Cook's and Johnsons books and he is definitely mentioned in the first two as well as the third i think. Mike Hebron speaks lots of him in his book and even has an excellent chapter about the book. Ron Gring mentions Homer a lot in his works that i have seen.

Tgm

The only times I remember TGM being mentioned on TGC was by Bobby Clampett, in which he had to end up being kind of defensive, because of the questions Peter Kessler was asking him.

I believe Bill Skelley may have also mentioned TGM on an Academy Live.

I believe they think the mention of TGM will be mis-interpretated by the public.

They need to get Ted Fort, Steve Ferguson, or some P.G.A. Member like that. Yoda would be great, but I think they usually only put P.G.A. Members on there... probably because of some contract, but not sure on that.

They had Jason Gore on with his 'instructor' who may not have been a PGA member.

I do recall Martin Hall mentioning TGM on TGC, I think it was the episode about his book "Golf Myths Exposed", but I could be mistaken.

It would be wonderful to see Lynn or Ted on TGC. Perhaps they can schedule that during "Homer Kelley Memorial" week - the new name for the Players Championship, or is it Pebble... yeah, I'd say Pebble would be best.

Interestingly, it was Jason Gore during this episode, who commented on Big Break IV winner Paul Holtby's swing, calling it a Golfing Machine swing. :)

When I was 19 there were no PGM classes, internet and Homer hadn't given his first Master Class. And...I had walk to my A.I. classes, in the middle of winter, barefoot, uphill both ways and we liked it.

No "kidding" arround.

Actually the class in the middle of winter was in Southern California, but I did have to walk from the elevator to the class, stopping for coffee and breakfast in the lobby on the way. The good old days.

Drew,

You neglected to mention the long hard trek to Benihanna's, for the late night study sessions.

It is a good thing the hotel and Benihanna's were in the same parking lot. I was getting tired walking to class :martini: . Funny how we were there every night and never ate once.

Actually, becoming and A.I. at 19 is pretty impressive :salut: , especially because you are from New England.
