Putting Forum Contest

For those working on your putting strokes or to find out how good you are - I propose a putting contest for those interested.

You'll need a putter, a ball and a tape measure!

Measure off 6 feet from the edge of the hole- mark that 6 foot mark (that's the free throw line!) with a tee on a close to level surface and start putting. Track your highest number in a row on this thread - ideally with your average score or handicap - although that's not necessary. Of course, this will all be based on the honor system- knowing that - you'll most likely see Bucket post first with something like 2000- but the rest of us can judge our skill level compared to other golfers.

P.S. Bagger, are you able to lock a thread for specific forum posters - if so please block Brian Gay from this thread!:eyes: Oh Ya, that Ted Fort guy also, in fact make that all Hitters, Yes, ban all Hitters from this Thread, also...... nevermind I'll PM you with the complete list.

I resemble that comment.

This may just turn out to be my personal putting log. I practiced for about 45 minutes tonight from 6 feet. 11 putts in a row was the best that I could muster.

neil 07-14-2007 08:05 AM

I've not missed one for 2 days.......you can use a" hot wheels " track can't you Mike?:confused1

Mike O 07-14-2007 03:45 PM

Neil,
Now that's using your intellect!!! I've calculated your totals based on 48 hours and x putts per minute- you've over-taken Bucket and are now in #1 position with 4357 putts in a row. That Bucket sucks with only 2001 putts in a row- not bad for no track though. Make sure you check that track every so often- you don't want a gap in between tracks to cause the streak to end. Keep me posted. Just to make it interesting- I'll bet you can't make the next 1000 with both eyes closed while bending down to pick up a bar of soap in front of you! (P.S. But before you begin that - Bucket would like to know the location of your practice green!

Meanwhile, I putted this morning on a better surface - chose a little right to left slightly down hill putt- best in 45 minutes was 15 in a row. I'll keep you posted on my results. I would imagine compared to a really good putter - I still suck- I'm hoping that Hull or Fort or someone else can post a legitimate #- where I can judge how much better I need to get. Although, if Bagger responded to my request- both should be locked from entering this thread- we'll see.

P.S. Bagger, only 80 emoticons!? Come ON! Break out the checkbook!:book:

We need some golf emoticons! I'll check it out.

I made a 6 foot putt today. It was for Eagle.:golf:
Does that count?

Yes,
It does! Your personal record is 1. Keep in mind it is not how many but the effort to beat your previous best that counts. Shoot for two next time. I guess wishes do come true! Thanks for the additional emoticons!! :golfing_banana:

Seven from six today.

I enjoyed this game. Started putting well when I went from thinking, "This is for the championship and $1M" to "Gotta beat MikeO on this putt".

Since the addition of the new emoticons- I'll be changing my signature as soon as I get a new inspiration.

I'll assume the Seven from Six- is Seven in a row from Six feet. Most likely you meant that you had a 7 on the par 3 6th hole today!:eyes:

Glad you joined the thread. Hey if you can use me as motivation great! But seriously- and just for clarification, this thread isn't about beating everyone else or anyone else- we'll keep the ego out of it as much as possible.
Here are the reasons that I had for starting the thread.
A) I need to be a better putter- so that's number one for me starting the thread

B) It allows one way of measuring how good you are

C) gives you a goal (more in a row than your previous best) to shoot for when you practice - that should make you better by merely having that goal/motivation (of course, mechanics are important- that goes with mentioning). Not to mention that it harkens back to those basketball days and seeing how many free throws in a row I could make- I can relate to this based on previous training.

D) The reason I wanted to know what your handicap, was to see how much better, a lower handicap player is with the putter. But again that's more optional than required. I just would be more motivated if three plus 3 handicaps posted that they all had 25 in a row- and I only have 11, as opposed to a 30 handicapper that was a great putter who had 25 in a row- because I'm looking for specific motivation to lower the handicap.

My current handicap is a 1. So I've had 11 in a row from a flat six foot putt 3 days ago (I'd suggest you also put a date on your post- at least I'll start to do that for my own records), then 15 in a row from a down hill slight right to left (figured the down hill putt might be easier- so not really an official record), and last night never came close in my 1/2 hour practice session session to my record of 11.

I'm sure others will feel this way- I'm not happy with most all of my numbers- say I make five in a row and miss the 6th putt- The thought/feeling I have is "Come on! This isn't that hard! That's pathetic!" Yet, it evidently isn't that easy either!

During the process you do learn things about your stroke and also about the subtle changes in the green!!!- Specially, if you are not putting on some really nice greens- if it is just slightly off- it can move a different direction- depending on imperfections in the green, etc. UGH!

Finally, I'm certainly not saying that this should be your only practice method for putting. I personally like to throw in some competitive putting on the practice green - that puts me into more of an on course pressure situtation.

Thanks,
:golfer2:

Now, if the above is true, then you'd be smart - not just to accept that on the surface but dig into that a little deeper and understand what took place there that you could learn from.

MikeO telling me how to be smart. Go figure. :laughing9
I didn't have much time and my practice green is pathetic right now, but...

Once I started rolling it well, it was because if a better stroke. Nothing mental going on other than taking the putter sweet spot through the line of compression as if the ball wasn't even there. A much shorter backstroke, more efficient motion than what I've been using on the course lately.

Shorter backstroke and firmer stroke through the ball was rolling it well. Noticed I didn't need to look up after the stroke.

Now I'm on a search for a better green.

This is a GREAT way to practice the putting stroke!

I hit 6 footers for 45 min. and my best was 25 consecutive today. I will be working on this several times in the next couple weeks so I will continue to post my results. I am a 3 handicap, but trending down thanks to fixing the putting.

Mike O 07-16-2007 01:16 AM

Nice Matt! Now, that's something for me to shoot for- although 25 that would be just in my dreams at this point.
Thanks for posting.

Welcome Mike O. I hit 26 today, took a bit more than 45 min. but started that streak at about the 40 min. mark.

Nice Matt- Any performance anxiety coming down the stretch - knowing you'd like to not have "wasted" your time and actually beat the old record of 25?

Thanks for setting the bar for me!

I made 73 in a row from 6 feet this morning. My handicap is 4.

Hey Dingleberry . . . Is there a point to putting the same put over and over? Why don't you go around a circle? How many flat putts do you actually have in a round anyhow? How many times can you fork food put it in your mouth without stabbing your eyeball?

Maybe a touch, interestingly I thought my 27th putt was one of the best ones I hit, but it looks like someone flat out blew me out of the water.

You negativity may indeed threaten this game of liar's poker. Why would someone hit their wedge over and over to a one hundred yard flag on the range? Why would you hit your six iron over and over on the range? Why did the chicken cross the road?:naughty:

What's a matter the ADD kicking in real bad? Just take some more medication.

I know you're used to going around in circles (Come On! You teed that one up:golf: )

The point is that once you know the putt- then any miss would be stroke related. That consistency of putt- allows you to isolate issues in the stroke.

Regarding your last question- for me - three! But what's that got to do with putting!

Don't worry MAC- we've been dealing with him for awhile now. In fact, realizing that you have to work with him- most of the forum members kicked in some money and you should have a gift delivered soon. I think last year we bought his wife a Mercedes- you probably didn't see it though- as I heard he traded it for a set of clubs on ebay. Make sure you are the first one to get the mail all next week- I wouldn't want any somebody to prevent your package from getting to you.

Bagger,
That was MAC's 6th post - go ahead and email him the secret password- he's now official.

Finally, MAC - RC says he won't write any insurance on buildings in California- what's he worried about "a little earthquake?!"- maybe you'll be able to handle my insurance needs.

I hear ya! But remember that it's not a competition to win. This is to see how much you can improve your best performance. Tiger shoots 22 under- but you don't say that's it I'm giving up the game!

Besides- I have a solution for everyone- since I am controlling the rules- we'll just bar this thread from all attorneys! That'll get rid of RWH's record.

OK bagger, put another lock on this thread for attorneys. Let's see we've got Brian Gay, Jeff Hull, Ted Fort locked out, all Hitters are locked out , and now all attorneys. I may need to have further names and categories added in the future!

With all of that said- I'm still at 11 and need to get to the putting green.

Excellent Bob!

I told you that Hot Wheels track would work great!

Neil told me privately that you really need to make sure the tracks don't separate over time- that's my guess on why the string ended for you!

Seriously Bob- Hit me with another post that you really did have 73- I thought 26 was out of my reach - 73's on another planet for me.

No hitting stroke for me on the greens anymore; threw it out with my steel-spiked Foot Joys.
