Mayakoba Golf Classic at Riviera Maya-Cancun / February 21-24, 2008

Congratulations to Brian Gay on his fine, 4-under par 66 in Thursday's first round. On a breezy day in Mexico, he finished T6.

Others on the LBG leaderboard include Greg Kraft (67 / T9), Jay Williamson (69 / T30), Neal Lancaster (70 / T24) and John Riegger (72 / T78 ).

Mexican Fiesta

In another wind-swept round, Brian Gay today continued his brilliant play with a 3-under par 67. At 7-under par, he is one shot out of the lead and in solo 2nd place going into tomorrow's third round.

Brian's round was particularly impressive because -- in a three-club wind -- he beat the field by six strokes. He beat Hall-of-Famer and El Camaleon Golf Club architect, Greg Norman, by twelve. As The Golf Channel's Curt Byrum said on the telecast: "It was a day of survival."

:salut:

From the PGA TOUR's website:
The scoring average on Friday was almost three strokes over par, the highest single-round stroke average on the PGA TOUR in relation to par thus far in 2008. The previous high was the final round at the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines South Course, 74.788.

The cut fell at 4 over par, the highest 36-hole cut since 5 over par was the cut at the 2007 PGA Championship. In terms of non-majors, it was the highest cut since 4 over par was the cut at the 2007 AT&T National. Other recent over-par cuts came at the 2007 Buick Invitational (1 over) and the 2007 Northern Trust Open (3 over).
Brian was atop the leaderboard for the first hour or so of the telecast, yet he got zero TV time. :crybaby: The cameras finally caught up with him late in his back nine, so we did get to see two shots into the green, a chip and three putting strokes. As a make-up, there was a nice interview at the end of the round.

Other LBG notables:

Greg Kraft 67-72=139 / T13

Neal Lancaster 70-70=140 / T24

Jay Williamson 69-74=143 / T50

John Riegger 72-75=147 / MC

"Watching" the scoreboard from UK...2nd now but still 2 under for the day after 8 holes...

just checked his driving stats....294 yards average !!!!!!!! still accurate with 58.8 % fairways hit.... but that puts Brian T34 for distance!!! that is higher than most of last season... part of a plan to cut loose? Exercise program? New driver - ball combo??

Well played BG!

The On Plane Right Forearm

Anyone who wants to know what an 'On Plane Right Forearm' looks like, tune in now to The Golf Channel's telecast, and watch the leader, Brian Gay. Watch him deliberately set his Right Forearm On Plane at Address and then bring it On Plane into Impact.

For those with the yellow book, reference 9-2-1 #2 and 9-2-2 #2. For Brian's work -- look, LOOK LOOK! -- see Post #91 in this thread: http://www.lynnblakegolf.com/forum/s...highlight=bosu . Especially click on the comparison photos #16 and #17.

Does Brian think the Right Forearm and its alignment are important?

From our Gallery video:

"The Right Forearm has been the whole key to everything. "

:)

P.S. In Photo #3 in the 'War Room' sequences from Post #91 above, check out the far left stand-up photo of Homer Kelley, in his red sweater and standing in his Inclined Plane setup in his garage, with his Right Forearm very much On Plane. I took that photo, and I am sure Homer would be every bit as proud of Brian as I am now.

Bucket,

Last time I saw you two guys 'connected' was 'after hours' at our '07 Falcon's Fire Academy in Orlando. Somewhere in the middle of his 10th Wedding Anniversary get-together, you and he headed out to replenish the beer!

P.S. In the interest of full disclosure, Ted Fort was the designated driver! And I think Jeff Hull also may have been aboard 'takin' names'!

More like self-designated!

I called shot gun and Brian had to ride in the back seat of his own hooptee . . . NOBODY (even a 62 shooter) BEATS BUCKET ON CALLING SHOTGUN. We went to one of B's neighbor's to raid his stash . . . Ted ate a bunch of their chicken too . . .

But the coop-dee-tat was when 8-Cork and Waterbed Ted had Brian doing dowel drills with his pool cues. I'm sure Mrs. Gay was like "Wow . . . to think what I have been missing on all those other anniversaries." That was some night . . .

I been sittin' by the phone waiting for The Gay's to have the retardz back over . . . I reckon they have an anniversary every year right? After the stellar impression that was made I can't believe we wouldn't be there every year. I mean whose wife wouldn't want to spend her anniversary with Ted, gnome, Marc-doin'-it-my-old-way, 8cork, Bucket, and a little puke green dude???

Hey Brian call anytime to schedule. . . we may could even bring Mike O and Daryl and have them pop out of a cake . . . but after tomorrow . . . it's on YOUR dime brotha!!!

article from PRESS ASSOCIATION

Brian Gay made a late push on Saturday to take over the lead after the third round of the Mayakoba Golf Classic.

Entering the round a shot out of the top spot, Gay fired an eight-under-par 62 and has a five-shot lead with one round to play.

At 15-under 195, Gay leads Steve Marino by five shots. Matt Kuchar and 36-hole leader John Merrick are another shot back.

Looking for his first career win, Gay obviously is in pretty unfamiliar territory. He has a 54-hole lead for just the second time in his career.

The first time was at the Colonial in 2004, when he dropped from a three-way tie for the lead to a tie for 14th after playing the final round at five-over.

"I just have to keep doing what I did today. It would be nice right now to just start the fourth round," Gay said.

"I've never had a five-shot lead, so I don't know. I'll try to play my game as best I can, you know, and just play smart."

Gay and Merrick were tied for the lead through 10 holes before Gay caught fire down the stretch.

Back-to-back birdies at numbers. 13 and 14 got Gay rolling and he closed his round with three consecutive birdies to take a commanding lead.

"I had an easy birdie on 13, the par-five, and made a nice putt on 14," Gay said. "The chip shot on 15 really kept me going. I hit the wrong club on the par-three and came up short down into the left. Hit a great chip to will three feet and saved par. That kind of kept me going. Then hit it close on the last two holes, six feet and four feet."

Question for YODA

Good morning from sarasota florida.

we are all following BRIAN with great anticipation.

knowing him as you do.......i believe you can bring us closer to the action

1- what was his mindset after yesterdays round??

2- do you think he got a good nights sleep??

3- besides the obvious, what is he thinking as he prepares for day 4

4- does his thinking change with a 5 shot lead??

5- what are the keys for victory in todays round?

6- and the final question......HOW DID YOU SLEEP LAST NIGHT??

GOOD LUCK BRIAN.......ITS NOT ONLY THE MAGIC OF THE RIGHT FOREARM................BUT HOPEFULLY THE MAGIC OF YOUR FIRST VICTORY.

The cell phones don't work when the guys are out of the country, so I haven't talked with Brian this week.

Regarding his mindset after the round, my guess is he was pleased with his position -- :happy3: -- and maybe even somewhat surprised. I'd like to know if he and Kip were paying attention to the scoreboards coming in. I do know that Brian Gay is not afraid to 'go low', and when he gets on a roll, he can really light it up (as he proved yesterday).

Regarding his sleep last night, I think he probably did okay. He doesn't drink coffee, and I've never seen him even touch a beer during a tournament week, so he won't sabatoge his sleep that way. Still, he wouldn't be human if he weren't more keyed up than normal.

He'll do his best to treat today's round as just another Sunday, but it's obviously not. And he knows that no lead, no matter how large, is safe on the PGA TOUR. Brian will get into his process and play the kind of golf he has worked so hard to produce. He's a smart guy who knows when to be aggressive and when to back off. Again, he's comfortable making a lot of birdies, and I hope his mindset now is to win by 10.

As for me, only my granddaughter's baptism this afternoon kept me from hopping a plane to Cancun last night. Probably just as well . . . Brian's playing great and doesn't need the distraction of seeing me there.

Oh, and the sleep thing? My eyes opened at about 5 a.m. and haven't closed since.

Good luck, my friend. You've earned your spurs and waited your turn . . .

Your time is now.
