The Memorial
Anybody know why Brian Gay isn't in the field at the Memorial? I would think he would have qualified with his win this year, his position on the money list, or his FedEx points standing. He's been playing a lot lately; did he need a break?

Memorial Memo -- Maybe Next Time

Also, he is foregoing U.S. Open qualifying this year. BG and Torrey Pines at 7,643 yards/Par 71 (35-36) just ain't hap'nin'. :( |
?
Surely you have to back yourself, especially at that level! How can Brian hope to have a career worthy of memory if he doesn't play in the majors?? I have nothing but respect for him - he wins on the best tour in the world, but I just cannot for the life of me work out why he wouldn't go and at least try to win. The US Open has had quite a few winners who weren't the longest but could keep it in play, then chip and putt the lights out! |
worthy
in answer to the above post i can only say that BRIAN WILL HAVE A
CAREER WORTHY OF MEMORY.................all golfers have decisions to make................to some a course doesnt suit their game... to others they make up a schedule and stick to it........i agree the us open is a major etc etc.....but 5 weeks in a row is a lot...........and he is making decisions best for himself and family........ i think lynn's post might have been wordy differently....(just my opinon) when i first read it......it sounded like brian COULDNT HANDLE IT..... im sure it wasnt meant that way......brian can play and score on any course in the world i see your point gp................just wanted to add thanks hjack |

Doing what is right is not always popular
Like a lot of golf fans out there I like the idea of playing for greatness, not JUST gravy. This is not an indictment on Brian Gay. Like many saps out there I get misty eyed when they hand out the four major trophies, especially the Claret Jug. Of course, those that cannot and are avid armchair commentators seldom realize that these supreme gentleman athletes play for reasons more important than glory...namely family. I admire the sacrifices so many make to play at the highest levels, but you also have to admire the courage it takes to do what you think is right by your family and career, even if armchair commentators take exception!:salut: One of my favorite golf stories is the way Bruce Lietzke did it his way. I too wish I could treat this infernal activity as merely a game! :eyes:

I know I haven't been posting on here long and I want it to be clear that I am not on here stirring for the sake of it.
That said, the last post frankly is rubbish. Brian Gay according to the following source click has earned almost $8 million from tournaments alone - I've no idea how much sponsorship must have made him but could we safely guess half as much again? To suggest he is out there grafting for his family is a crock in my opinion. The only way to get remembered is by winning majors. Ask Monty how many of his European money list titles he'd swap for just one major. At least Monty played in every single major he could. What's next, avoiding certain courses because of windy or rainy conditions? |
Perry Poops the Open
Kenny Perry wins the Memorial & says is not playing the US Open because he doesn't like Torrey Pines and his strategy was to play where he thinks he can win to assure a Ryder Cup position. So he's a bum too because he picks his tournaments? This game is a business too...Brian has captured his 1st win this year and hopes to win again but you've got to decide in advance where your best chances are for doing that...seems clear cut to me.:)
|
rubbish???
with all respect please let me disagree
how do you place a dollar sign on time with your family???? i dont know how much m oney brian gay has won.......and i have no clue as to his sponsors.......what i do know is this....BRIAN GAY.....does not back off.......not from wind...or rain....or sunny days i have been to approximately 15 tournaments.......i am privledged to know some of the players personally... its not all glory.......and decisions are made which suits player and family best..... if BG wants a week off........he takes it........i am not here to argue but lets add it up us open.........................1 million to winner british open...................1 million to winner masters..........................1 million to winner pga..................................1 million to winner ofcourse i made up price...but close AND time with family priceless |

Your words not mine, but yes, someone ducking a tournament when they are enjoying an Indian Summer in their career seems strange to me. Perry (and BG) will have quite a few years on the swing on their porch once they've stopped taking the pension provided by the seniors tour - during those evenings do you think they'll be happy they ducked out of those majors or perhaps will they get misty eyed and nostalgic not to mention regretful that they gave up a chance to play one of the biggest tournaments in the world? |
Quote:
I'm not arguing that time with your family is important, of course not. However, BG and everyone else knew exactly when (and where) the US Open would be being played this time last year, if not before! If you're stated aim is to be one of the best players in the world, to be a major champion and to beat the worlds best when they are playing their best then you have to tee it up in the majors and you plan for that accordingly. As I said, I'm not stirring here and I totally respect BG, however, if I was good enough to win on the PGA Tour, you can be sure I'd be teeing it up in the US Open - regardless of the length. |

just a question
GP
if i may ask............please dont use the word ducking......(ofcourse you can do and say whatever you want) im just asking..................lynn works very hard with brian....and other players.................i would think the last thing brian would do.....is duck anything........he is 10th in scoring.......he can putt..........he has won on the pga tour........ducking what................i think what bothers me.....is that you make it sound like he is afraid to fail......................that is so wrong so so wrong......he fears nothing.........ok.....now i am a bit aggravated...and before i say something i will regret......and bagger will erase......i will close with this.......give the man (brian) credit for knowing what to do..............ohhh yes.......1 last thing..........even tho they are not majors.....my friend (not name dropping ) mr. azinger......has not and will not play the colonial....or the byron nelson................why??? no idea..........but GP with respect i say every day is major day on tour.... HJACK "When (U.S. Captain Paul) Azinger said in the paper that the guys on his team are going to have to win tournaments, ITS MY OWN FEELING AND GOSH I HOPE IM RIGHT...................THAT BRIAN IS ON TRACK FOR LOUISVILLE |

I understand why you think as you do. My point was not clear enough. I made the Lietzke comparison because I have read that he would put the sticks up during the summer months (missing the US Open often) because it allowed him to fully participate in his children's lives. I was not referencing monetary considerations. A little league game, or a fishing trip ranked very high on his to do list (as well as classic cars!) The journeyman lifestyle (even with all the perks of a tour player) is no picnic. I have been told by those that know that it can reak havoc with a good family life. For the record Monty has gone on record as saying he would not trade his eight orders of merit for any one major. Why? Who cares, it is a retarded hypothetical! It is easy to think of these sportsmen as public domain, afterall they are in the business of entertaining us, right? I would love for Brian to tee it up at Torrey Pines, and would love it even more if he played to his potential there. With every swing I know I am watching a triple barrel hit! :) He is a pro, and he has good reasons...no doubt Those viewing the hoisting of the US Open trophy with misty eyes from easy chairs seldom think in practical terms...and probably do not give a crap about the person himself (only the entertainment value itself) I am sure somebody somewhere is pissed off that Tiger only tees it up 17 times a year, afterall 17 tournaments would have been a frenetic year for Nicklaus! I think it was Scott Hoch who used to get it in the neck for not playing the British Open. They are all private contractors in a free world. |
speaking of nicklaus
did we all see jb holmes walk right by jack......at 18....after having a bad day...
im sorry...did i say bad day?? 4 days 65,000.....bad day?? 20th place jb....do me a favor.....call jack in north palm beach.....and apologize.... you dont diss the greatest golfer whoever lived...AND WHILE IM RANTING......eldrick.....i love your game.......you have brought young and old....men and women to the game.....BUT..... TIGER TIGER TIGER........you never personally called jack to say you coudnt attend....................your agent did........now tiger your dad taught you more respect then that.....yes your agent called jack over the last few months updating him on your progress.....BUT have respect for the man you will be replacing as the greatest ever.. AND MAKE THE CALL.......... ok.......have a good day everyone |
The Open
Not sure how Brian is fixed for July at Royal Birkdale....but he would be welcome in UK...great place for family holiday...Liverpool (current European City of Culture) is nearby ...ok that might be seen by some southern english chaps as a bit funny but I like scousers...and London is never far away...
Birkdale is measuring 7,173 yards this year - par 70 - but if you know links golf in the summer the yards don't mean much...if it is dry and sunny it is less...if a gale whips up off the Irish Sea then even Tiger struggles...but I know that a guy who can hole putts will win! Royal Birkdale has a really great Art Deco style clubhouse design - quite popular style amongst many English coastal towns. Loads of other great course nearby...Formby I have played and it really nice and varied....some pine tree stuff....some obvious links stuff. Hosting British amateur this or next year....Olazabal beat Monty there years ago for the amateur championship... again another major that Monty missed.... Welcome to UK , Brian !! Not sure how your recent PGA tour win puts you for automatic qualifying but come on over and bring the family. You can putt and you could win!! Faldo won on links because he could control the ball...position not distance... I really want to go this year - hope to finally see Tiger in the flesh...my father saw Hogan at Carnoustie and I want to see Tiger.:golf: |

My comments are those akin to an innocent child. BG can safely be considered as one of the best golfers in the world, why therefore would he not automatically plan his year around the 4 biggest tournaments in the world? If each person reading this considered what their own 'majors' were each year - for some it could be Captain's Day at the local club, others it could be the scratch cup or for others major amateur or indeed professional events. Personally for me, it is the North of Ireland Amateur Championship played at Royal Portrush GC in Northern Ireland. Now, come hell or high water, no matter how well or poorly I am hitting it, I am going try my best to ensure I am there teeing it up on the first morning. Can anyone get that I am not trying to be rude or controversial, I am just amazed that BG wouldn't want to be in the field trying. If you compare the other leading golfers in the world, yes, they pick and choose where they play each season, but they build their schedule around the majors - bloody hell, Tiger builds his surgery around the majors lol! Hopefully the people getting annoyed at me will realise I'm not here trolling or trying to start an argument, just amazed and curious at BG's decision. |

oh no its not about annoying or irritating
you say how you feel and i (we) do the same we are here together....learning from each other hj |
Man, this is an interesting debate. I can see both sides of this argument, and I guess for each individual it's just a matter of priorities.
If you're priority is to go down as one of the greatest golfers ever, you play in the majors. Bottom line it's how greatness in golf is measured. If you're priority is God, or family, then you as a man don't give a d#$% what the rest of the world thinks and you do what is most important to you as an individual. I can respect both decisions. Interestingly enough, I heard Lee Trevino say the other day that he lost two families because of his devotion to golf. Wonder if he'd give back a few majors to have a better relationship with his family?? |
family
let me say this
jack nicklaus made the statement that when he was playing he didnt spend a lot of time with his family.......and when he retired his priority would be his family??? is it?? i have no idea a man in golf is measured by his majors..........i will agree with that BUT.......the measure of a man is his family...... ok final thought......and if brian gay reads this......i want him to know it is said with the utmost respect.......... if brian tries to qualify and does........and if he wins the us open his name will be along side many champions.......might even get him close to ryder cup but.......if he plays memphis........and takes a week off.......he hears the sounds of his little ones saying daddy daddy your home......... jack nicklaus said he regretted not spending more time with his family....... brian?? smart man......... hjack |
I'm a little late in reading this thread, so here goes. One of the reasons Nicklaus did not spend as much time with his family was economics; players back then did not compete for anywhere the $$ that they do today. They had to play more tournaments to make a living. Todays players don't play near as much; I would think 25 tournaments played would be a lot; which means they have half the year where they are not on the road playing. I agree that its important to pace yourself in a year to optimize playing perfoemance, but players are judged on there history in majors pure and simple. Not trying to compete in them indicates you've made a judgement that your playing time is better spent on other events ie. you don't think you'll be competitive. Not a knock, possibly smart as you've realistically eveluated your options and decided whats for you.

As tball88 stated above, Lee Trevino was the guy who sacrificed everything for golf. He was driven to escape the poverty and prejudice of his youth: "I put golf before my family. I put it before my friends. I put it before my religion."Jack Nicklaus sacrificed none of these. Instead, he rarely played more than twenty tournaments a year and made a great deal of time for his family. He was there for his wife and children -- he literally fainted dead away after the birth of each child -- throughout the important events of their lives, sometimes even jetting home during tournaments. In fact, his commitment to 'family time' inspired Chi Chi Rodriquez's great line: "Jack Nicklaus became a legend in his spare time." :salut: |
Big Jack is the Macdaddy!
That was my understanding with regards to Nicklaus. The master of hyberbole Gary Player may not have exaggerated when he made the comment that Jack Nicklaus was the consumate family man. Note post # 15 for Okie! I have NO respect whatsover for a person that sacrifices their family. Isaac Newton made the decision not to marry so that he could dedicate his life to natural philosophy...I can definately support opting out of a family but never their neglect. I man without perspective is a dangerous man! Have a great weekend LBG loyalists!

2 jacks
then from reading the last couple of posts.....
i am now convinced there are 2......jack nicklauss' both winning 18 majors or 20 if you care to count amateurs...... i will not try to prove my point ,but i can honestly say.....i am right.. ok.....lets do this......someone tell me the real reason nickalus said to jacklin in the 1969 ryder cup PICK IT UP please enlighten me........................ |
Should have vetted the numbers a bit better. In the 60's Nicklaus averaged over 20 tournaments a year, in the 70's he played 20 only once and in the 80's averaged only about 15 per year. Think Tiger only plays about 15-18 per year, which I think (?) is probably par for top players. Not sure about players a rung below, but even if they play 20-25, there should be ample time for family obligations if they schedule it right. I know myself , in season, I work 6 sometimes 7 days a week averaging 10 hours a day. In a seasonal business its the only way, bills and all that other stuff.

Alrenz,

gp i think that was your statement........and probably politically correct but to me......i my own world (which is probably more fantasy then real)...........................BUT......its MY world i dont see how you can "fail" if you.............. try again.........its just me |
jeez!
Are you just short of arguments that you want this non one to continue? If you try to qualify for a tournament and you don't get in - then you 'failed' to qualify! Its not rocket science HJ! I appreciate your sentiments but the modern practice of 'protecting' kids by insisting there is no failure in life in my eyes fails them to prepare them for the real world. |
i do know the difference
failure- lynn saying Also, he is foregoing U.S. Open qualifying this year. BG and Torrey Pines at 7,643 yards/Par 71 (35-36)
just ain't hap'nin'. here is success.......brian trying and missing a playoff now a swing coach (i guess he is brians) saying that that is failure..........................geeeez not believeing in your own guy well to all........i have listened and tried to learn......and im sure no tears shed for me to say.......i am leaving the forum.......not a threat.. just feel like its time to move on... thankyou |
C'mon Already
Dang! What is up with that hg? I may be dense or something but I did not detect any kind of malice towards you, only a difference of opinion. There is still much to learn, especially from archived material and anything else that Yoda and co. care to provide us. So I say...STAY! Where else will you go for the truth in teaching? Ultimately, the forum is about Homer Kelley's work, not petty squabbles that can in most cases be chalked up to mere misunderstanding. C'mon hg!
