SBS Championship / PGA TOUR / January 7-10, 2010
1 Attachment(s)
HONOLULU, Hawaii / Sunday, January 3 >> Mrs. Yoda and I are preparing to leave Honolulu -- 80 degrees here! -- for our mid-afternoon, inter-island flight to Kapalua, Maui, and the SBS. It's 80 degrees there, too.
Meanwhile, check this morning's view from our balcony overlooking Waikiki Beach at the Outrigger Reef Resort. I hate it when this happens! :happy3: |
Oh my gosh that's BEAUTIFUL!
Have a great week Mr. & Mrs. YODA! Kevin |
All the best Yoda. Are you planning to video tape your presentation to the P.G.A?
I know a few folks who'd love to see it! |

We're now down safe and sound in Kapalua and all checked in at the Ritz Carlton. :eyes: http://www.ritzcarlton.com/en/Proper...ui/Default.htm There's a larger airport about fifty minutes away, but we flew directly into Kapalua, one of the smallest I've seen. How small is it? [Drum roll . . . ] It's so small that the bag guy took the bags from the plane and put them directly on the baggage claim belt (first photo). The belt never moved, of course, and we passengers -- all thirteen of us -- just picked up our bags and walked away. The second photo is off our new balcony located on the resort's Bay Course. The SBS is played across the way on the Plantation Course. I've called my friends at the Kapalua Golf Academy and will take the shuttle up there early tomorrow. They tell me there's a top teebox with a spectacular ocean view, and I'm looking forward to launching two or three hundred practice balls in that direction! Meanwhile, BG and I have traded texts and phone calls. Based on his MO, we'll meet up at the Plantation Course in the afternoon. Work, work, work . . . Seems like that's all I ever do! :laughing9 |
Change of Plans
Quote:
Connected with BG and family on the way to dinner. He's into the early East Coast wake-up and wants to tee it up near 8 AM. We're off together to the near-by Planatation Course around 6:45AM. Pool at 2! :laughing9 |

It must be a real chore having to go to Hawaii to work Yoda! |
Quote:
Jerry and I were going to hit balls at the dome today and work some basic motion with our Taly's. We are canceling because it's 10 freaking degrees below zero, with a wind chill of 22 below! When it's this cold, they can't get enough heat into the domes to be comfortable. Maybe I'll drive to Hawaii. :laughing9 Please tell Brian good luck from his friends following on LBG! :salut: Kevin |
Yoda,
Anything special or changes made with Brian during the off season.Did he step up workout routine? Have fun in Hawaii why we suffer in 32 degree weather in Atlanta:( |
Pffttt Hawaii...its alright for some eh? :D
Currently stuck in snow and ice here. Good luck to BG for this week. Can't believe the 2010 season is kicking off already. Alex |

Hey Lynn, if you get talking to Mr Vokey again during your trip see if he remembers being asked this question early in 2009!
who was the first player to be recorded as having a Vokey Wedge in his bag on the PGA tour? If he answers straight away, ask him whop was the first guy to win with one in his bag!! Then remind him what a small world we all reside in! |
GPStyles / Vok Intercept Coming!
Quote:
Got some great stuff coming -- Ryan Moore, Stewart Cink, Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelley -- in conjunction with the Golf Digest annual shoots from this location. Meanwhile, to your question . . . Vok leaves Maui tomorrow, and I've got a full day planned at Kapalua Golf Academy. So, no way for a Plantation Course meeting. But, he'll be on Oahu at the Sony, and we've already talked about spending time there. I'll shoot your questions to him then! :salut: |
YODA,
Anything new and different in Brian's bag this year? Is Jay able to get into next weeks tournament? Thanks, Kevin |
Thanks Yoda, hopefully he'll get a kick out of it!
When you mention the cool stuff regarding Stricks, Cink, Kelley and Moore are you hinting that you might be working directly with these guys?!!! Now that would be the breakthrough LBG and TGM would need to take over golf instruction! |

Hey Lynn
Hey Lynn,
This is Hamp!! I haven't spoke with you in a while. It is good to see you and Brian working on a big year starting in Hawaii this week! I was happy to see the press release from where he signed his endorsement deal with the company I work with this morning Stamen Medical Systems. Tell BG I said hello and good luck. I will be tuned in! How has everything been with you? Talk to you later buddy. |
Hi Lynn,
Is it just the bag, has he still got his mizzie's in there? |

Golf Digest Photo Shoot
Golf Digest shoots photo sequences for many of their instruction articles each year at Kapalua. Here are a few I took on Wednesday of tournament week.

Thank you for all the pictures so far YODA. Man, it's fun to see...
How about 28 men, playing a 7400 yard golf course, and while I type this, not 1 of them over par. DAMN, THESE GUYS ARE GOOD!!! Kevin |
Agreed,
They should invited me. Just to put the performance in perspective. :liar: Golf has the huge benefit of including a lot of shots at top level that even the amateur can match. Where they differentiate is in the consistency and in the authority in the ball striking. But a keen amateur will produce as good results on quite a few strokes during a good round. It's fascinating. It is fascinating to watch cross country skiers too. (I'm from the home country of skiing). Or track runners. Or swimmers. Or syclists. But the speed they produce is something most people have a huge problem of identifying with - even if they take 5 years off and just practice. I usually tell my non-golfing friends that golf is THE game for people with the athletic future behind them. Of course knowing that this is a beautiful lie. |
Mai Tai Time At Kapalua!

80 degrees . . . Gentle breeze . . . Late afternoon sun. What's not to like? :-)
|
You lucky bastard.
Not that you haven't earned a place in the sun. :salut: One question while you are there. Who's shoes would you rather be in? Your own or Brian's? Or perhaps Ms Yoda? Do you feel the competitive fire or do you prefere to be on the sideline of the battle? |
Still A Meateater

More good news is that, in every other aspect of this new career, I remain very much line. And that suits me to a "T". :3gears: |
Golf and life has more than a couple of things in common I guess. When everything works perfect, timing isn't an issue. But usually - timing is everything. In business and in sports.
I didn't realise the significance of you coaching Brian Gay until I read the HK biography and started to see the whole picture of TGM around at www. I hope you and Brian and some of the others of the talents you are tutoring tremendous success through 2k10. I'll be rooting for anyone who promotes TGM this season. |

It's been a long road. A road traveled for more years, in fact, than many who read these words have lived. For many of those years, planted seeds lay dormant. Now, they are bursting into full flower. As they should. :) |
Steve Stricker Golf Digest Photo Shoot
Here are some photos from Steve Stricker's shoot. The same Golf Digest team does the job each year, and they work for about four hours in the afternoon. I saw them shoot Ryan Moore, Stewart Cink, Steve Stricker, Jerry Kelly and Zach Johnson. I know they did Lucas Glover, but my schedule prevented me from being there. My guess is that they did about a dozen guys.
After the player shows up -- they're coordinating schedules after his round on the nearby Plantation Course -- there's a brief discussion about what the magazine wants to see. A lightweight plastic ball is used for many of the shots, particularly those directed at the cameraman! They always advise the player to be aware that impact has much less resistance, and they should take care to avoid injury. Even with that warning, a couple of the players were really surprised at the different feel. The crew also asks the player to describe his views on how he plays the shots they're looking to see. Then, a mini-interview is recorded that will later be transcribed and edited for the article. There are also many still photos where the player demonstrates certain key positions. Along the way, the cameraman keeps the player advised as to shirttail tucked in and bill of cap up (so their face can be seen). The hand-held camera, the flash lights and reflectors are all coordinated to produce the desired effects. From time to time, I performed an able assist, from holding the reflectors to scampering after a few more of the light balls. And, when you see the yellow and orange alignment rods in Zach's upcoming article, guess where they got'em? After that last assist, the Golf Digest coordinator said, "We owe you one." I'll remember that! Full Screen Slideshow |
On the Grounds Saturday At the SBS
|
Wow a 600 year old (Yoda) dog with some new tricks. Nice.
|
Congrats Yoda.
If they owe you one, the door may be wide open. Journalists & reporters love to receive good stories served at a silver platter. As long as they have the final word they'll print everything you serve them (almost) A feature about the past, current and future state of TGM wouldn't hurt anyone - would it? |
