...Payne Stewart was a true classic and left a void unfilled on the Tour.

Payne Stewart was known for his classic 'golfer's' dress. Less well known was his respect for the history of the game and its traditions.

At the suggestion of his father, he registered into each United States Open Championship by signing his full name:

William Payne Stewart.

Asked why, he replied simply:

"It is our national championship."

A number of years ago a local golf pro here in Pittsburgh decided to have a golf glove and picture of Payne Stewart framed. Both had been autographed by Payne. They sat in his home for a couple of years and then tucked in a closet in his office for a couple more years. Just kept thinking that he would hang it somewhere but never got around to it. On 10/25/99 he found it in the closet and FINALLY hung it up in the hallway leading to his office at the club. That afternoon he heard the news that shocked the golf world. Tragic coincidence.

Ya it seems to me he was one of a kind (and by all accounts was a great guy)....

..and he certainly was one of a kind in how he dressed.....!

He stood out on tour.....they need more guys like that.

I agree BTW....about Ryder cup captaining (or at least one hell or a player and enevitably a leader)....he seemed to have a great energy.

A great player and person who will always be missed.
I remember bumping into him during a rain delay at the Scottish Open at Gleneagles years ago when I was a junior. Spoke to me and a few other juniors from my club and wondered why we were still hanging about in the pouring rain, what our handicaps were and so on.

Probably had the closest swing to Bobby Jones in the modern era.
I guess he was always the life of the party too...
