The Grove Park Inn is a great place to stay, nice spa for the wife, great golf course too. It is in North Asheville. Just below Asheville, there is a resort called Etowah Valley. great golf and very reasonable prices.
Etowah is suppose to be a fairly good value. I had forgotten about Grove Park, played it before the multi million renovation, couldn't afford to play 3 holes on it now. Springdale over in Canton (west of Asheville) use to get very nice reviews for lodging and golf, but haven't heard anything much in the last few years. The Lake Lure courses( Apple MTn. and I forget the other one) (about 30 mins south of Asheville) are both excellent and usually offer some good deals on lodging & golf.
