A short backswing is also better (Notice that the last 2 points are Hitter's caracteristics).

"6-H-0 IMPERATIVES You can’t have Educated Hands unless you know what to teach them. The following curriculum is imperative.
E. Associate the following with “Hitting” (10-19-A). See 7-19.
1. Angled Hinging (7-10)
2. Simultaneous Release (4-D-0)
3. Grip Rotation (7-2)
4. Single Wrist Action (10-18-C-2)
5. Active Right Elbow (7-20)
6. Fixed Lag Pressure Point (“10-11-0-3”)
7. Radial Acceleration (10-19-A)
8. Axe Handle Technique (6-F)
9. Slow Start Down (6-B-1)
10. Angle of Approach (2-J-3)"
I know this is sixth edition text, but I like the fact that it puts the proper emPHAsis on the right sylLAbles.
The Hitter must (imperative) have a slow Start Down. I've said many times that it feels, to me, like a crescendo. It starts softly and gets louder. The ability to accelerate is paramount. Over-acceleration is death.
"10-19-A DRIVE LOADING Drive Loading is the “Axe Handle” technique of the “Hitter” – an out-and-out Right Arm Thrust against Clubhead Lag (Angular Inertia) striving to accelerate (radially) a Pre-stressed (Bent) Clubhshaft, from a slow Start Down through Impact. Per 7-19-1. See 2-N.
All Short Shots can be short, strong Strokes, eliminating all unnecessary motion by using only the one Accumulator (until greater distance is needed). But always –PUSH a lagging Clubhead through Impact.
Clubhead Throwaway here is due usually to over-acceleration. Use shorter Strokes and/or lower Thrust. The Stroke can be shortened per 10-15-B or by taking advantage of the fact that the Backstroke will stop when the Right Elbow becomes fully bent."
If you'd like a little 4 Barrel action, Drag a little in Start Down. But, start it slowly.

Very cool stuff! I'm at work, I wish I had my book with me. I can't wait to get home and study this curriculum!
Thank You,
Kevin

Thanks for the great advice about not starting the hitting downswing action too fast. I think that's why I was not having success when I tried hitting - I was thrusting too soon from the top. I need to give hitting another chance.
Jeff.

Ah yes. The past 3 posts remind me of my lesson with Ted back on a foggy ,misty Atlanta morning in early April.. Knocking off some winter rust and struggling with over-acceleration for most of the lesson----like Nick Price on speed. And Ted tells me that as I start down to feel like I'm going in slow motion--"which will feel like torture to you !" Memories of the Swamp.

It really ruins it with the fast Start Down.
And, I know this subject has been beaten to death in another thread. But, the idea of straightening the Right Arm from the Top is foolish. If my gun's in the car and I get in my first fist fight, I'm hoping the moron starts straightening his arm, before he moves his shoulder towards me. He'll be eating through a straw for weeks.
Ask anyone that's used the 3-D imaging equipment, and they'll tell you it would be less than advantageous. The idea of doing this could be useful for someone. But, accomplishing it is another thing.
Poor players Release the club from the Top. Great players Release later.

Jeff,
Ted is right on that and it's almost impossible to do the Hitting stroke properly with anything else but a Sloooooooooow start down.
Using a shorter backswing is also having unexpected results.
Many times I noticed that shortening the backswing in a hitting stroke led to a far better compression and more consistance in precision.
But as Ted stated, the first time you do it, it's a torture for your mind!
Strange, facinating and wonderful thing: the slower and the shorter you go, the more the comfort, power and precision!

Homer said to make your stroke slower and shorter, until you start losing distance.
