Three LB Certified Instructors To Compete In the PNC

The PGA of America's PNC -- Professional National Championship -- is the premier event in 'Club Pro' golf. Each year, thousands of the best players in 41 PGA Sections across the country enter qualifiers for this championship. The top 20 finishers in the PNC earn entry into the PGA Championship, one of golf's four 'majors'. Trust me, qualifying for the PNC is a really big deal.

The Georgia PGA Section qualifier was held this past Monday and Tuesday, October 24-25, 2010, at The Manor Club in Alpharetta, Georgia. When the dust settled, Ted Fort and Jeff Hull, both Lynn Blake Certified Master Instructors, had earned their spots in the field. Meanwhile, Curt Sanders, Lynn Blake Certified Senior Instructor, earned his spot in the three-day Carolinas PGA Section qualifier played September 14-16 at Grandfather Golf and Country Club in Linville, North Carolina. The 2011 PNC will be played next June 26-29, 2011, at Hershey Country Club in Hershey, Pennsylvania. This storied venue hosted the 1940 PGA Championship in which Byron Nelson defeated Sam Snead, 1-up, in the 36-hole final. I have been fortunate to have played in 4 PNCs, 2011 will be my 5th. However, nothing compares to the first time I qualified for this great event. I measure my season by this one event. If I have a great year and do not qualify then I feel like it was all for nothing.

Ted has worked hard for a long time on his game and has shown tremendous improvement. He has always put together some solid rounds but nothing like he did Monday and Tuesday. The 69 he shot was very good, but there were a dozen rounds under 70. The 70 he shot on Tuesday was truly a great round of golf, only a couple of scores better. Dealing with the pressure of trying to qualify for 1 of 7 spots on a pretty tricky course with steady 20-25 mph winds was a huge step up the competitive ladder and I congratulate him for it.

I look forward to the trip to Hershey with Ted and Curt. Hopefully we will make some noise and eat some chocolate! I know Ted will beat me in that contest.

Not bad for a guy who seldom plays golf except on Mondays (and usually in competition).

Continuous progress, not instant perfection, is the goal.

I became a PGA Member in 1996, but I had very poor information about the golf swing. So, I have to consider that all my attempts prior to meeting Yoda were in vain. Since I got the TRUTH, I've made steady improvements in my ball striking, even at the ripe old age of 41! I've always believed that I was the best putter that ever lived. Whether that's a reality or not, I'd kindly request to not be awakened from that dream.

I've always had the belief that I could play at a higher level. And, at times I have. At best, it would be one round out of two or two out of three. This tournament was the first time I was able to put it all together. My ball striking was the best it has ever been, and I putted the way I've always putted. I hit 14 greens on day one and 15 on day two. With the wind blowing 20-25 mph on day two, it made it much more difficult.

In my practice round I had 7 birdies, which I thought was the kiss of death. I thought it would be difficult to recreate. I was correct, because in the first round I had 8 birdies! In the second round, I had 5. So, in 54 holes of golf I had 20 birdies.

I was getting updates from one of our media guys throughout the final round. And, I was very proud that I could hold it together, knowing that I had it in my grasp, and succeeding under that type of pressure.

It's great to have friends like Jeff that have been in this situation and are willing to share their knowledge. He has already offered to help me in preparing for this trip. I've had numerous emails and phone calls from people that are genuinely happy for me. And, all the guys at the tournament were extremely gracious and supportive.

It will be the largest stage on which I've competed. And, no matter the past success of any of my competitors, I'll stand on the first tee knowing that I have better information than they do and believing that I'm a better putter than all of them.

I hope it's a Tin Cup story...minus the 5 balls in the water on 18.
