If the stance is narrow with the driver, the LOW POINT will be in front of the ball at impact, causing the player to take a divot, unless a compensation is made. Some people with the narrow stance, move backwards a little, through the ball. Some of them, like Hale Irwin and Scott Hoch, do very well. Most good drivers, however, that I can think of have the stance about shoulder width with the driver. Look at Tiger Woods, Adam Scott, Nick Price, Nick Faldo, Ben Hogan, etc..
