I think you are on to it Grapegoat.
6B had some good advice with the dowels. When you start tracing a straight plane line in the backstroke, you will stay on plane which prevents the right wrist from bending too much in the backstroke.
As you said, extensor action is very helpful.
Lasers and maglights are also handy.
