I actually videoed my swing and found that I was taking the club back a little too much to the outside and at halfway through my backswing, the shaft was not at 45 degrees but was much much closer to vertical. No good at all.
That alone really helped me with those steep, low pulls.
Having corrected that, my right elbow seems to be cocking properly again (it's now fanning more and going around my body more, as it should for a swinger). The other takeaway I'm working on (more open clubface) now feels much more natural...everything seems to be back on track for now. And yes, my 3/4 irons are now going higher when I hinge 'properly' (right wrist straight back).
I still would like to take out the left tendency if possible. More experimenting tomorrow.
