Uh, that's a bit overstated. You don't
fix a guy (our talented new friend in G.O.L.F.,
Philip Cardwell) who just two days before shot the course record (65).
But you
can help him understand how he could (and did) virtually eliminate his Double Shift Plane Angle that he had wrestled with for years (Right Forearm Takeaway); increase his accuracy (Right Forearm On Plane at Address and Tracing through Impact); and improve his Power Package structure throughout the Stroke (Extensor Action). Also, to replace the slight Sway (caused by the disruptive Shoulder Turn Takeaway) with a Stationary Head and proper Pivot. So...bye, bye Plane Shift, Bent Left Arm at the Top and the increasingly sore Left Wrist through Impact.
Phil implemented the changes immediately -- don't believe all the 'two years to re-build' rubbish -- and was like a kid in a candy store. That's the benefit of working with good players: they can do immediately anything you ask them to do. And if what you are asking them to do works, then the result is likewise immediate. And make no mistake, the principles and procedures of
The Golfing Machine work.
As
Director of Instruction at The Links, Phil has a blue-ribbon pedigree. He earned his spurs over the past decade teaching with
David Leadbetter, Bob Toski and
Jim Flick. His time with the
Golf Digest schools also exposed him to
Paul Runyan and
Jim Hardy. Not too long ago, he also began reading the little yellow book. When I walked into his studio and saw the book, an Impact bag and a mop attached to a golf shaft, I knew I was soon to meet a kindred soul. I'll have more to say about Phil in the coming days -- complete with photos! -- and the wonderful clinic he put on for our group. Trust me: Ol'
Yoda learned as much from Phil as he learned from
Ted and me!
Alignment Golf.
Gotta love it!
