Those movements are unorthodox for everyone else in the world but are 'his' orthodox movements. Repeat what you can, no matter how you do it, in your own way,BUT fulfil the laws of physics and geometry at IMPACT and you got it. EDUCATE THE HANDS!!!!!!

No question about it. Thanks Vic and will do.

I am new to TGM and believe wholeheartedly in the 3 essentials and 3 imperitives, the 3 functions and the 3 stations. I'm just not that good yet with patterns.

Just a question, tho. Do you mean that unorthodox swings cannot be described as a pattern? Or were you just saving me from a major headache?

Thanks again,
spike

A swing may be unorthodox by way of what it looks but as long as the movements can be sychronized to produce ideal impact alignments is what makes it effective. All swings have component variations and no swing is perfect. They all have visible 'flaws', some more, some less. But they all are capable of winning majors if their owners can repeatedly get into proper impact alignments ( Furyk,Floyd,Couples,Daly to name a few).

I see a load of instructors trying to get players into alignments that they cannot acheive for many given reasons. Maybe they are not physically capable or have ingrained off aligned movements through their years of play. The result is a frustrated student and a 'bad' instructor, though the instructor may mean only well in what he wants to impart to his student. There is a copybook swing which every one wants to emulate and teach but I think it is humanly impossible to acheive. All swings have their variations and no two individuals swing alike and THAT IS A FACT. Also no golfer swings nearly the same swing twice in his golfing life. And thats why there are a zillion ways to swing the club but only one effective way to hit the ball - succumb to the laws otherwise suffer.

Thats the beauty of TGM when one can understand the essentials and imperatives and just inculcate the importance of those into their students coconuts - success and improvement is INEVITABLE. It works for ALL my students and I guess we all teach one species - Homo sapien' so it should work all over the world too.

No doubt it becomes easier to acheive impact alignments easier if the swing gets closer to copybook alignments and thats what all instructors and students work to acheive - BUT is it possible for 99% of golfers to acheive what their instructors want them to. Afraid not. In my experience ,if you stay with the essentials you WILL build a repeatable swing undoubtedly. If you can master the Imperatives you have a champion.

But what is the teacher left with if not a textbook example to ask their students to emulate? The reason IMO that the Couples and Dalys of the world are successful is their raw talent-something that weekend hackers can not develop.
