Bethpage!
I'm 15 minutes from Bethpage, and have played the other four courses there hundreds of times. I have played the Black exactly three, the last time three weeks after the Open, on July 4th 2002, when the heat index was 115 degrees at three in the afternoon. Why only three times? Because it's the only golf course that after I finished playing it I wanted to throw my clubs down in the parking lot and run them over with my car...continuously. If any of you have ever been to the Front Range of the Rockies, or stood at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and felt like an insignificant speck on the face of the earth, well, that's how you feel at the Black(especially on the 12th fairway). It's just massively overwhelming, a great course for a US Open.
I had tickets for every day of the Open back in 2002, but didn't buy this year. If anyone has an extra this year, I'll be glad to give you the tour of the place. And, my two favorite places back then were the landing area on 12, and behind the green on 17(THAT crowd will crack you up, guaranteed).
The people's Open is back. Enjoy!

I would like to see it in person someday and I look forward to watching the Open played on it.

What year was irrigation installed for the fairways and greens?
