I was watching Brian’s Confessions of a Former Flipper last night, and he talks about getting the left shoulder as far from the ball as possible (left shoulder going up plane makes right shoulder go down plane). I think you can see this kind of move in Brian’s signature on his forum also. But other people I have read (on forums) suggest a flatter left shoulder is better. I seem to recall someone who had visited with Mac saying that he felt the rising left shoulder caused a loss of lag. Annikan’s swinging sequence he posted a little while back seems to me to be an example of this flatter look. The rising left shoulder probably relates to having a more purely pivot driven stroke (not pivot-controlled hands mind you) – but are there any advantages/disadvantages to each option.
