Why is it that I can hit laser like penetraing short irons with that wonderful ball-turf "click" sound, however, drive and long irons....dont work.

Driver and long irons=low hard hooks

Or the evil opposite twin of the overcompensated push-slice, to avoid looking at the low hook.

Are there any ususal suspects I should check first?

Are your hands vertical to the ground at impact?

When your hands are vertical to the ground at impact is your clubface in the correct positioning ?

Also check your plane line.
