My guess is more "un-informed talking heads".

I'm more and more under the belief that certain golfers are "pre-disposed" to be really long, and others will simply be "average" in length. The obsession over length that seems to have taken over golf in the last few years seems almost unhealthy. The game (especially at the highest levels) is still soooo much about putting, and that is in turn related to being really good from 140 yards and in. I contend that the longest hitters aren't usually the straightest (while the shorter ones tend to be straigher), so they're not hitting approach shots from the short grass. There is some sort of "equalizer" there as a result.
