Had a buddy who would do the 5 iron putter round thing. Always broke 80. Never was in real trouble. Bang, Bang, bump and run, putt.
Takes a temperment- made the others and me mad.

There's something to that. Something very old in fact and at game's roots perhaps.

When I was playing in Scotland recently , the caddies (I never had one but saw them in action) were like hunting guides. Assessing their man, frugal with strokes they'd take clubs out of the bag, so to speak, progressively as the round went on. First the driver, then the woods, then the long irons etc. A mid handicapper would be advised to hit a mid iron off the tee on a par five often.....things like that. Frugal with strokes as oppose to our tendency to pull the least possible club that'll get you there at all times.

Its a different sort of course they play over there on the linkslands but its something to consider. A 90 shooter with a caddy in Scotland will come home with a lot his golf balls still in his bag and a pretty good score.

we all say it's just a game of skill, but, I'll stand with those who know it's war.
