I believe so. Years ago, when I was coming up, we hit these short shots with an open-open set up and traced the line left. This create a "steep" angle of attack and some divot. Decades later I am standing on the tee working on a swings and every tour player I work with has a much shallower angle of attack. No mystery to it, they are using a very flat plane inside 20 yds of the green.
My instinct is to hit with all clubs all shots....
SB,
I'm a swinger but I "hit" almost exclusively inside 45 yards now - using either angled or vertical hinging based on the shot at hand. I focus on thrust and lag pressure for distance control and don't worry much about it being a chip or pitch motion. By that I mean I start at impact fix, use RFP, and then right arm thrust to AT LEAST both arms straight.
